Frederick Thomas Isaacson was born in Soham on 23rd August 1875,(Newmarket Q3-1875 3B:557), baptised in Soham on 23rd February 1876, son of William Sutton and Hannah
ISAACSON (née AVELEY). When searching for him it must be realised he was at times Frederick Thomas, others he was Thomas Frederic
1881 census...Aged 5, he was at The Queen's Arms, Bridge Street, Soham with his father William Sutton ISAACSON [54] beer retailer; his mother Hannah [51]; brother William S. [24] farm labourer; sisters Adeliza [12] and Georganna [9]. All were born in Soham. 1891 census...Aged 15, 'Thomas' was 'father's help at Inn' at Queen's Arms, Bridge Street, Soham with his parents and sister Georgeanna. As Thomas Frederic Isaacson, on 4th June 1900 in Soham he married Sarah SCRIMSHAW.(b.4-12-1874) 1901 census...Aged 25, "Thomas' was at the Queen's Arms with his father and his wife Sarah [26] born Newark on Trent. 1911 census...Aged 35, 'Frederick' was at High Street, Soham with his wife Sarah [30] daughters Georgeanna [9] and Sarah [3]; sons Frederick Thomas [8], Arthur Sidney [7] Francis [5] and Edward [1]. All their children were born in Soham His Army records show his children as :- Georganna [5-5-1901], Frederick [22-11-1902], Arthur Sidney [14-2-1904], Francis [7-3-1906], Sarah [24-7-1907], Edward [14-11-1909], Howard Edgar [5-2-1912], Oliver [26-4-1914] and Eric [16-7-1916]. By the time of his pension card his widow and children were at 1 Station Terrace, Soham Also as of August 1919 his own siblings were;- Aveley James ISAACSON [59] Brook Street, Soham; Anna Eliza STITTLE [67] Hall Street, Soham; Eliza Jane DARNELL [65] Clay Street, Soham; Hannah Sophia CASH [59] Catford; Ada Clara GILBEY [51] Fulbourn Road, Cherry Hinton and Georgeanna BEETON [48] Angle Common, Soham. His nephew William Sutton ISAACSON (son of brother Aveley James) was killed in Belgium in 1918. see here |

It is recorded on 14th December 1916 that he was to be placed on the reserve and if fit for Reserve Road Construction in France, was to be mobilised. on 1st February 1917 he was attested for the Royal Engineers No.22682, a labourer from 1 Station Terrace, Soham born in Soham aged 41 years 6 months. He was 5 feet 5.5 inches (166.4 cm)tall, chest 34.5" to 36.5" (87.6 to 92.7 cm), married to Sarah, née SCRIMSHAW. He joined the 335rd Road Construction Company, Royal Engineers 16th February 1917, joining the BEF in France on 12th March 1917, returning on 10th May 1918 due to ill health. Transferred to Railways and Quarries training Depot, Bordon as No. WR/24915 Royal Engineers. Admitted to hospital in Woolwich 10/6/1918 to 31/7/1918 with bladder problems, he was then sent to No 1 Eastern General Hospital in Cambridge having been selected for a medical board with a view to discharge. Whilst as Cambridge they found a large tumour and he was operated on, but died just after on 27th November 1918. His wife was present. The official cause of death was given as sarcoma of the bladder. He was brought home to Soham for burial on 3rd December 1918.
